I often spend an entire evening working my way through a Domestika course. I chose them based on whether they elicit a sense of intrigue, or sometimes, whether they will help me communicate my ideas for my business in a new way.
I like to explore different creative mediums and Domestika has plenty of courses to meet that need. I guess I’m trying to find a creative medium that really plays to my soul. I love writing, video and audio, but I also like to explore other creative mediums.
One such course that peaked my attention was Geometric Portraits using Procreate by Luca Font. It was exceptional. Great teacher, great insights into features in procreate and an inspiring medium to communicate our observations of others.
Here’s one of Luca’s pieces from IG:
And so I got cracking. And to be fair, and hopefully accurate, I don’t think I did too badly!
Here was my first one - pretty basic as I started to explore the various layering techniques and using the eraser to cut out elements.
A bit basic but not too bad.
I then spent the following evening doing another one - this time exploring some of the even more advanced layering features.
I was quite happy with this one - although I think it was a little busy in places. Overall though - enjoyable.
I then got a little bored with people and faces and moved on to a car. One of my all time favourite films is La Haine. A french movie which, in my opinion, set the bar really high for thoughtful, gritty movies about race, social injustice and sense of identity. Brilliant film.
I always wanted to be a film director and so I tend to remember various scenes, techniques and camera angles from movies. One shot I absolutely adore is the low angle of the camera whilst they are driving around Paris in a BMW. The angle is sublime. So, I tried to geometrically shape it.
It didn’t go so well. Not bad, but not great either.
I then had a go at the BMW from Ronin. Not bad either, but not great.
It’s a technique that I will continue to explore. It’s not quick and requires considerably thought around which elements of the image to keep and which to remove. Also, what shape should I use? Does it reflect the underlying image?
I then really pushed the boat out and drew Robocop. This one really didn’t work :)
Until next week.
Rob..
