CSP 021 - Parent Car Scene - a failed creative experiment - Free eBook
And why pivoting with ideas clears your head
Hey Creative Souls,
I hope you are safe and well.
It’s been super busy here at CSP HQ, with lots of writing, work and film making. I’m working on a new video for the channel, as well as prepping for an upcoming break.
In today’s edition I share another failed creative project. And just like the 30 Days of Creativity failed project, this one too ultimately became a different medium.
I’ll muse a little about the guide and why creative projects can change forms, and share a few snaps from the ebook .
The eBook is available to download here.
Parent Car Scene
Parent Car Scene has been a project on my mind for around 17 years now.
It’s started, then stalled, changed form, moved to the backlog, become a website (I even bought the domain name a while back), and then stalled again.
A lot of creative projects do that. However, one thing I’ve learned is that if the idea doesn’t go away - and it keeps coming back to challenge your mental space - then there’s likely something left to explore about it.
A such, sometimes we must let go of the expectations of what something should be - and turn it into something else.
Not only may the alternative creation be pretty good, if not better, but it frees up that mental bandwidth. Sometimes we’ve just got to ship it and see.
Parent Car Scene was originally going to be a real in-person local car meetup.
The idea was that parents would bring whatever cars they had and we would meet up to admire, or joke, about the cars there. There would be some classics, some fast cars, some modified stuff and no doubt, some people carriers too.
The twist was that we would also bring our kids.
It would be a safe, secure and friendly vibe as we pass on our enthusiasm for all things cars (and bikes, and vans etc) to the next generation.
The idea was that the kids would also take photos, and shoot video, of the cars and the meet too (if they wanted to of course)- encouraging exploration of these mediums, but also to see what footage and photos we ended up with.
I would then compile this into videos or photo for the social feed - back then a Facebook page.
However, all creative pursuits require time, energy and attention - and I just couldn’t provide enough of it.
Maybe it didn’t spark as much passion as a project as I thought it would - but the reality is work and life got in the way - and I was trying to write a book at the same time.
So it stalled, then faltered, then fell.
Until now - when I figured I could spend a couple of hours pulling together some poems, photos and random musings about cars into a free PDF download.
And who knows, maybe the meet up will launch at some point soon. I just suspect now we’ll have a few more electric cars than we would have done all that time ago.
Not all creative failures mean the end of the idea. Sometimes it needs time and space - and maybe needs to resurface in a different way. If an idea doesn’t leave you alone - maybe it’s something worth exploring again.
